stressed womanThe good news is that the National Patient Safety Forum has 7 recommendations for transforming healthcare workplaces so that they are safe for patients and workers.  They require Eyes of Workforcelong-term leadership commitment and allocation of resources.  Raising awareness among healthcare professionals and consumers about the problems will hopefully contribute to a close look at  the National Patient Safety Foundation’s  report:  Through the Eyes of the Workforce:  Creating Joy, Meaning, and Safer Healthcare released Spring 2013.
I don’t think there is any quick fix, but have hope with combined power of consumers. healthcare professionals, and adaptive leaders as their collective and informed power will compel, prioritize, and support necessary work!
Here are a few statistics from the report to grab your attention.
Physical Harm
  • Health care workforce injuries 30 times higher than other industries
  • More FTE (Full Time Emplyee) days are lost due to occupational illness and injury in health care each year than in industries such as mining, machinery manufacturing and construction
  • 76% of nurses in national survey indicated that unsafe working conditions interfere with the delivery of quality care
  • An RN or MD has a 5-6 times higher chance of being assaulted than a cab driver in an urban area
Psychological Harm
  • Lack of respect: A root cause, if not THE root cause, of dysfunctional cultures- 95% of nurses report it; 100% of medical students; huge ssue for patients
  • Lack of support
  • Lack of appreciation
  • Non-value add work
  • Production pressure

Talking about these issues is an important step in creating the incentive to become informed about and insist on the hard work and costs of positive change.  Avoiding the problems or superficial solutions will not be, should not be acceptable.  Are these statistics surprising to you?  Why do you thingk they are so prevalent?
